My boat was hauled yesterday, and the yard discovered my centerboard was missing. To add a bit more detail, the pad-eye on the board has been loose for a couple of years. I've been holding off on the fiberglass work needed to repair the board, as I had other pressing boat expenses and I was happy sailing with the board down. So, bottom line, having not tried to lift the board all season, I don't know when I lost the board. I'm doing to have a diver check the under my slip, since I have no knowledge of the board coming off while under sail, but...

This leaves me with two questions:
1) Assuming I don't find the board, any one know of any options other than the $3K board offered by Tartan?
2) I don't relish the idea of sailing without a board (I like the ability to point high) but is it safe, if I decide to wait a year?

Thanks

-Jim

I don't know of a source other than Tartan, but many places would be happy to make one if you can provide the specs - that would be the difficult part. The weight and balance would matter for smooth operation. If you find the old one, the board won't be difficult to repair, but the bolts probably pulled out of the keel - that will need repair. You might want to inspect the pipe from the centerboard well to inside the mast where the pennant ran to make sure it is all sound.

As for sailing without, I sailed 4 years with the centerboard in the garage. I dove the boat one day and saw a bolt gone and two without heads and one loose, so I attached a halyard to the pad-eye and hoisted the board up and took it home. Its rebuilt and waiting for a repair on the bolt holes.

The only difference sailing with or without the board is the amount of leeway the boat makes. You have to overstand quite a bit to before tacking for the layline at marks.

Thanks for that info. I assume that I sailed for a good part of this year without the board myself. She still pointed reasonably well, although I did feel she was not pointing as well later in the season, but being a lazy cruising sailor, I didn't have precise evidence, and assumed I was just being paranoid :-(. I still plan to get her repaired, but it's good to know that it's not urgent.

Do check out the pennant tube though. It's below the waterline and after the board separated and before the pennant parted, it may have put undue stress on the pipe. Some have replaced the pipe from pitting and corrosion, so after all these years, they can fail.

If all looks good and everything is dry in the bilge between the mast and the centerboard trunk, then everything should be okay.
