On my boat there is an area maybe 1' X 2' where the mast steps on the top of the ballast that is unfinished. I expect that when the boat was built there was some attempt to cover this area and create a finished appearance. I'm thinking that a piece of starboard cut in half along the fore/aft axis and scribed for the mast and the deck stabilising rod would work, but I wonder if any of you good folks could tell me what Tartan originally did to finish this area or what some may have done subsequently? I could even imagine a fabric "boot" similar to that above the coach roof that weather proofs the hole through which the mast penetrates same. A photograph would be real helpful. Thanks a million.
