We have some very fibrous insulating material on the port and starboard side of the engine on the removable panels under the sink and in the quarter berth.

I catch my hand on it every time I check the oil, so much so that I've got a bit of a rash on my hand where I do it.

It just occurred to me that this could be asbestos. Thoughts?

I don't think it's abestos, believe it was completely banned by 1979. But was getting a very bad rap in the 60s and 70s. Abestos will cause a skin rash, but so will fiberglass. Which is the most likely material.

I'm hoping it's not asbestos, it's cracked/broken up. But it feels far to scratchy to be fiberglass. I just picked up some new foil backed insulation and plan on replacing it.

It's glued onto the access panel, so I'm still going to do my best to contain the dust when I cut the stuff off. Better to be safe then sorry...
