Anyone know how to repack the rudder packing? Mine has been leaking. Don't know if it takes some size of packing material, or if it is greased. I keep hearing about zerk fittings, but I don't have one.

Here is the results of my investigation:

The packing is 5/16" and one package will make enough for two sets. It takes only one wrap of packing material.

Remove the top collar. It is held in place with three bolts using a 9/16" wrench or socket. Raise the collar as high as it will go and use a sharp pick to remove the old packing. I use a cotter pin puller (auto store) or you can use a bent ice pick. Use the old packing to measure for the new piece.

I don't know if this is advised or not, but I coated the shaft and other surfaces with a water-proof grease. (hardware store)

Start one end of the packing and work it around stuffing it into the groove. The grease may make this easier. Once it is all in, replace the collar and you're done.

This can be done in the water as the packing is above the waterline.

Hopes this helps someone.

I am expereicneing the leak now, I had thought it was the new PSS seal I put in but after closer inspection while underway I see its the rudder.

Any pictures of your repair?

I had the packing replaced on my Islander 28, but have not done it yet on my T37. The marina told me that I would probably have to tighten the nut a little after a while as the leak/drip may increase as the packing settles in. He said I might have to do it a couple of times, and that was about right. After a couple of months, the slow drip stayed constant.
