West Marine has the Lewmar ocean 70 flat base hatch on sale till July 4,,,, so I had to order me one. I'll take pics of the install and offer a review of the hatch. If all goes well it would be a significant savings over the Atkins & Hoyle hatch that I was thinking about ordering.

Make sure the hinges on the Lewmar will fit the opening. It seems to me that some friends took delivery of a Lewmar replacement hatch and had to send it back because the 3 hinges would not work without some substantial excavation of the opening.

Well my new Lewmar hatch was delivered. Ordered it from West Marine. The bad news? out of the box,,, it did not seal when closed and dogged. It also had a dent in the side. I took it to my local West Marine and returned it.

Ordered the Bomar stainless steel Voyager instead... it cost a little more but the reviews are outstanding.

I actually just installed new Lewmar Ocean 70 forward and Ocean 30 for the salon hatch.

The old Atkins & Hoyle hatches came off pretty easy, and filled the old holes and sort of matched the old gelcoat over the old screw holes. The old hatches weren't remotely centered on the openings, especially the salon hatch. We centered the new hatches athwartships, but had to take some liberties fore and aft so that we could average out how much of the deck we had to grind away to fit the dogs and the hinges.

The whole job took 3 days, but only working about 2-3 hours each day to avoid rain storms and actually go do other fun things over the long weekend Wink

Grinding out the recess to accept the hinges was really easy with a dremel. We went slightly oversized, then painted some gelcoat into the new cutouts. At no point did we have to excavate far enough to hit core or any voids in the laminate.

I'm really happy with how easy it was and how it came out. Our hatches seal well and we've had days of storms here in Beaufort with no leaks. Way easier job than rebedding, replacing gaskets and screens on the Beckson ports...

I did the same, the good thing is that the new hatches are through bolted, the nuts hide under the wood trim. I found that,as the wood trim is slightly smaller than the hatch hole,I had insect screens made which drop in when needed.Real cheap at local hardware store.
Second pic is center hatch with screen in.

Very Nice Job Mike. How much was the hatch? Where did you get the butyl tape? Thanks. Timoko

Cost for the Bomar hatch..Model # 123187. West Marine was $1219 free shipping to store. It comes with 4 dogs which ensures a good watertight seal and the SS exterior sure looks great,,, goes with the SS port lights. Makes the boat look 20 years newer.

Got the butyl tape at New Found Metals when I ordered my new SS port lights but you can get this at most hardware stores and if not in stock, they can order it. Butyl is the only thing I use anymore to seat anything on the deck. It's flexible and really does the job, lasts forever.
