Looking to paint the bottom side. The boat currently has ACT BottomKote. Since I'm moving the boat to Lake Superior, I'm thinking of painting with Micron CSC.
I just want the boat to look nice and keep the hull dry.
Checking the Interlux compatibility charts it appears to be ok. Condition of existing paint is pretty good in most areas.
Sand with 80 grit.

I called Jamestown and spoke with their Tech Guy.
He said just a light srub with a 3M ScotchBrite pad and wipe with Interlux 216 and should be all that is required. Sounds like a lot less work than sanding with 80 grit.
I want to make sure that the paint will bond yet not stripe all the way down to the gel coat.

Any recommendations on prep and coating systems would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,

ACT is an ablative paint. I don't see what sanding will do that Scotchbrite won't do. As long as Interlux says you can put CSC over ACT I would think that a scuffing with Scotchbrite should be fine. I use a piece of "open mesh" drywall sand screen on a drywall stick and that works fine. I'm not sure what your reference is to keeping the bottom dry but bottom paint isn't going to have any effect on osmosis.

Great idea using drywall open mesh sanding paper on a extended handle. Appears faster and more effective. Do you wipe down with Interlux 216 after sanding prior to painting?
Thanks.

I probably should but to be honest, I don't. I do a trip around the hull with a scraper, knocking off any obviously loose stuff. Next trip around is with the drywall sander and the third trip around is with a stiff scrub brush (again on a stick). Sometimes the third trip requires water. After the boat is completely dry, I paint. Sometimes that is an hour (lunch and a beer or two) and sometimes it is the next day depending on time of day, weather, etc. Now the bottom of Esprit looks like it has an advanced case of leprocy! There is not a smooth spot on her below the water line. I do not maintain a racing bottom! The epoxy barrier coat was applied probably 18 years ago or so and the bottom paint has been building up since!
