I'm looking at an older 37 ( Built in late 70s, S&S, great lakes area).

I thinking that the wiring will need replacement, it has a Westerbeke 40 hp engine ( original) and the stove is shot.

Any best guestimates on what the costs would be to have all the electrical replaced, engine, and a new CNG stove.

I thank you in advance for your comments.

Regards,

Nick.

I wouldn't assume the engine need replacement. Westerbekes really do run forever on minimal maintenance.

I'm in the middle of rewiring my boat, doing the work myself with help from an electrician friend and an electrical engineer slipmate. I'd hate to think what the labor costs would add to the project. And by doing the work myself, I am learning a lot about the systems, and know every inch of the wiring. So far I've done the following:

$200 - All new AC wiring, replacing the solid copper original wire
$350 - Two new AC Distribution panels
$150 - New Battery Management panel (replaces the original 1/2/Both switch
    $500 - Inverter/charger (Xantrex Freedom 10 - 1000 watt on sale)
    $250 - Link 1000 Battery Monitor/Invertor Remote
$175 - Galvanic Isolator with monitor
$250 - New battery cabling (upgraded to 1/0 cable
$150 - Xantrex Pathmaker Battery Combiner
    $30 - GFI Outlets throughout
$400 - Assorted high-voltage fusing, buss bars, shunts

Total (so far): 2.5 boat bucks!

Lots left on the to do list, including switching over to golf cart batteries, replacing all the 12 volt wiring, and switching over to LED cabin lighting.

But today... I'm sanding on my toe rail. =(

Jay

Mustangs...... I would get the oil tested before thinking of engine replacement, after all, you're talking in excess of 12k to replace the Westerbeke. The oil will tell you of any condition that may be going on internally which may warrent replacement. Do a compression test as well. I've got the same engine and after 30 years, she still runs strong.
The original wiring on my boat was pre-tinned stranded for the D.C. and solid copper for the A.C. You'll need to replace at least the A.C. with stranded, but the D.C. wiring may be adequate for you're loads if you keep things simplified. You'll need to at least upgrade the main panel to accomodate all the extras, and you'll need to increase the house battery bank if it hasn't been done yet.
The price of a re-fit on our T-37s is small compared to the price of the new
T-3700's!!!!
Good Luck, Tom Very Happy

Thanks to all for your input/comments.

I like the older S&S Tartan 37s and now I really won't consider any other boat.
That's why I'm posting on the T37 forum.

I just want to get a realistic idea on the upgrade costs prior to making an offer.

PS.
Does anybody know where I can obtain a user manual?
I looked on the Tartan web site for user manuals(T37 S&S) just so I can learn up on what is required for general maintenance with no luck.

I appreacite your help/ comments.

Regards,
Nick.

I have a Tartan 37 "manual" which I would copy for you if you will pay the costs of copying and shipping. But I would not recommend it. There is not much in it except for how to replace the line that lifts the centerboard.
