Noticed my anchor roller plate popping up when retrieving the anchor. Upon inspection 3 of the 4 holes had threads stripped from I guess corrosion from possibly 30 years. What is the best fix here? Go up to next bolt size and retap? Or is drilling all the way through and through bolting a better idea? Anyone had this happen and have advice? I will also mention that the drum of my roller furling causes me to have to slightly maneuver the anchor by hand as anchor is leaving the roller or coming back on. I do have an electric windlass. Only a slight issue but does make anchoring from the cockpit not really an option. Not a single hander so that's not really a big deal. But this could be a time to try and remedy that too, although I don't really know what the remedy is? Or would you just leave that alone? Any advice/thoughts appreciated. Zach

Zach,
I am pretty sure that anchor rollers were almost always an after market owner add-on and you'll find a variety of mounting configurations. My boat came with one (through-bolted) and I added a second one on the port side (through-bolted). I also have a sacrificial teak plate to protect from chain wear on the deck.

Thanks for that info. I was thinking that the through bolted solution would make for a stronger system all together, be more permanent, and be an easier fix than retapping. Anyone think of any negatives to this? What might I not be thinking of?

I would use butyl tape for a sealant because of the flexibility and longevity...............

Knocked it out this weekend successfully. Had a mobile boat maintenance guy that I have worked with come by and help. Did the through bolt route and happy with the results. The holes were actually all the way through already to my surprise. We just widened them all a little and through bolted. Only thing I can figure is that a previous owner had a retapping kit on hand and didn't feel like or wasn't able to climb into the anchor chain locker or just wanted to make it a one person job when a repair was needed there in the past? Interesting find while I was crammed up in anchor chain locker: the two bolts that go down through the plate and hold the fore stay in place did not have nuts on them! Just a washer and a lock washer on both, suspended in sealant. Guess the bolts had worked their way off over time. Who knows when. The main bulk of the load of the fore stay does seem to be placed on the piece that is bolted on the very outside of the hull over the bow, but I was concerned nonetheless to see I had been going without bolts there. Wouldn't hurt for others to shine a light in there and check that.

Also, careful when climbing out of the chain locker. The louvered door rips right off.... You will need the skills of a gymnast to keep from placing pressure on the frame, and it is 8 little screws being held by a quarter inch or less of wood (more like 1/16 inch for some). I got it back together and back in and told the dear wife to open it gingerly from here on, but I do foresee a rebuild there in my future.

Hello;
I had this anchor support made by a welder here before leaving for the Bahamas in 2010. The system was sturdy and it held good even in severe weather.
It adds up 24 inches on my boat overall lenght but it was worth the expense.

Nemea,
Could you post some detail/profile pics of your anchor-bowsprit?
Looks like your fabricator did a nice job.

Thanks,
Tom

Here are some other pictures of my arrangement.
It was made of welded 2 inch stainless tubing and some stainless bars. Delrin custom made anchor rollers.
Holds my Rocna 20 Kg Anchor and my smaller Delta spare anchor.
The thing is attached to the hull at 5 points (2 sides with metal backing plates; solid rod bolted thru hull and 2 stainless bars bolted thru the original nose cast fitting.
I dont have the exact measurements here but if you want I can go take measurements at the boat next week while we will be dressing her up for winter.

Regards;

Nice set up!!! Very robust, my current one is lousy.

I just picked up a new roller from Garhauer, $120 for a 30" SS unit, will try to remember to post pics after the install.

Cheers

Did you get the 3" or 4" model from Garhauer? Are you replacing one or adding a second? I'd really like to add a second roller, but most I look at appear under built to me. I've bought a lot of stuff from Garhauer and would expect anything from them to be robust.
