Hi, I bought a Tartan 37 a few months ago and my airmar p79 thru hole depth transducer is barely working,.most of the time it is giving incorrect depth or nothing. It is installed on port side under the last sole opening in the v-birth cabin

I'm sailing now and I want to install a new, possibly a non-thru hole version, but it will not work if balsa core. Is there balsa core all the way down or does it stop by the waterline it at another point?

If anyone can recommend a spot and brand to install then please let me know

Also, at which wind speed do you reef a Tartan? I have a 150 genoa and in-mast main furling system

The bottom of the hull is not cored. In the anchor locker you can see where the coring stops and the hull thickness changes.

We installed an in-hull fishfinder transducer next to our speed transducer, which is under the little trapdoor starboard and forward of the mast. Filled up with antifreeze it isn't the best fishfinder, but it works OK and can easily see the bottom. So you should be fine with an in-hull depth transducer.

Thanks for the reply Smile

I ordered the depth sounder

Mine actually had an area where it was thicker in the anchor locker, in the middle section

Right. The thicker area is where there's a balsa core

As for reefing, upwind we'll start to reef the main when the apparent wind is 15 or 20 knots, depending on how adventurous we're feeling. When the helm really starts to load up and the autopilot isn't keeping up when the boat heels in puffs is the best guide for when she needs a reef.
