Greetings all,

Has anyone on the list dropped and rebuilt a rudder? Wondering what is involved in getting it off the boat. My moisture meter shows that its pretty saturated.

In the tech resources section, Chapter 1, Section 1 explains how to replace the pintle which has to be removed to get the rudder off the boat.

I'm in a rush so I did not search for the post where someone rebuilt the rudder complete with pictures. Sorry.

Hmmm, tech resource section. Can you point me there? I don't see it. I did a search of the board using "rudder" as a search phrase but didn't see anything about a rudder rebuild.

Whether or not I end up rebuilding the rudder is an open question but i definitely need to rebed the the rudder pintle as it is leaking and once I have it off, should probably replace it. I have found some excellent information in this forum but I can't seem to source tartan parts. Looks like tartanparts.com is no longer in operation. Where are folks sourcing parts these days?

Once you get it out, inspect, repair if needed, then replace if required. I had a machine shop put it together, with the parts I found. Quickly done and much cheaper than Tartan Parts. There are two styles, three bolt and four bolts. Also many get caught having to redrilling the holes in the hull, ugh. Use 316 SS.

On rudder, sound it with plastic hammer. To see if it sounds solid, or hear voids. Some have water, but are still sound.

Thanks Skipper. Sound advice. This will be next winter's project as the boat is already in the water. Hooked up a back-up bilge pump just in case the main one fails.

I have dropped mine. Cut it open, dug out all the foam, glassed it with vinylester and filled it with solid cell marine foam (like $400/ gallon) I also removed and rebuilt my rudder pintle.

Here's what I said back then:
My rudder was soft from saturation. My page marcthesailor@blogspot.com has extensive pics.

-Cut skeg off
-dropped the rudder.
-Cut open the starboard side
-Clean out inside well
-Re-glass the cutou...
