Hi
I discovered a 25 cent size rust spot on my oil pan. The paint has buckled away and split apart and I can see some rust. I have not picked at it because it is not leaking....The spot is located on the front of the pan on the bottom right side where the pan bends back. Does anyone have any idea where I could buy another oil pan (my engine is the 40 hp ). Also do I need to pull the motor to replace the pan?
My mechanic suggested a cheap fix of cleaning it really good and using some epoxy. Not sure about using a "cheap fix" they usually cost more in the long run
thanks
bill

I'd LIGHTLY clean it and do the cheap fix while finding a replacement pan. I don't know if you can replace it with the engine on the mounts. I think it would depend on how much room you have under the engine.

I was delivering a Swan from Tortola to Newport and had to stop in Bermuda for fuel. One day out of Bermuda we lost all of our oil due to a rusty hole in the oil pan. Lost the engine and sailed back to the states.

My opinion was the engine zinc replacement was not on a regular schedule. Heck I don't think the zincs were ever replaced .... and the boat was maintained by one of the leading marinas in Newport !!!

I'm not saying your problem resulted from zinc replacement but it's the first thing I think of now when I see a rusty engine.

How can the engine zinc be responsible for protecting the oil pan? It never comes in contact with seawater. The culprit is most likely surface rust that was left unchecked for too long of a period of time, either that or the engine sat too long with a little condensate inside the pan but I just don't see how the zinc could be responsible.

If it isn't rusted through, I would clean it carefully and paint it. Has to be surface rust. if there was a hole, I know couple folks who repaired pans with epoxy and it seems like it would work fine if you did not have an active leak and could get a clean surface. JB Weld or an epoxy that bonds with metal would be best. There is not much pressure in a pan.

You might find someone parting out a W50. I did that to mine when I repowered.

An oil pan off an MGB will work, also W50 crank and block is the exact same. I've been running a crank out of a MGB for 10 years.

Good luck with the repair, if you go that way. Maybe try JB Weld epoxy. You might be able to braze or solder in place.

Thank you all for your response....I think the last thing I want to do is to pull the pan. I will keep an eye on the rust and at the end of the season I will clean the spot up and treat it with some primer...If a leak does develop I'll try JB Weld...
