I've got a question above reservoir caps.....

My old 4lb (and probably original cap) has no rubber pressure seal that seals against the lip of the reservoir tank. It has the rubber seal on the middle spring part.

I'm thinking it cracked and wore off before I bought the boat.

The new 7lb cap (replacement part provided by Torresen) has both rubber seals. Unfortunately the new one I purchased is bad because it collapses my upper hose after cooling. If working properly I'm thinking the middle valve at the top of the cap should open to allow the coolant to flow back into the engine after cooling. I've ordered another cap.

Just wondering about the caps the rest of you are using.

I'm on my boat now and just checked. I have a 7lb cap. I bought it about 7 or 8 years ago at an auto parts store when I installed a coolant overflow tank. Works great. Your are right. The cap should open at 7lb but also open in the reverse direction on vacuum to add coolant on cool down.

What engine do you have? My W40 uses a 4 psi cap and does not have
the rubber around the outside of the cap (only inside), I have never had a heating
problem with it, runs at 180 degrees,

My 1980 Tartan does not have a reservoir and the upper hose kept collapsing on engine cool down. So I finally figured out that the air was getting out but not back in. So I drilled a little hole in the outer metal ring that sealed the top rim. The cap is still sealed at the neck of the filler so I am getting the correct pressure from the cap but now is allows air back into the compartment when the engine cools off.

Engine still runs at 180 degrees at 1700 rpms.
