I have decided to replace all the cooling hoses on my Westerbeke W50. I also have a water heater attached to the engine.

I am wondering if anyone has any hints on what problems to expect? I have heard that the system will need be 'burped' but other than stopping and starting the system without the 'radiator cap' on I have no idea.

I was in touch with Sherwood pumps and got some specs. Does the rpm of the engine equate to the rotation speed of the lower central pulley on the front of the engine? I was going to rent a strobe to check on things

FYI - I drained the system when I pulled out for the winter. There is a drain plug to the left of the oil filter if anyone is looking for it. Westerbeke was not sure where to find it until I sent them photos.

I've done it a number of times. First fill it with the high point vent open which is located above the thermostat. Start the engine with the radiator cap off and fill it as necessary. Run it up to 180F and verify the thermostat opens. The level should fall relatively quickly as the engine and hot water lines fill and you should see a slight drop on the tempature gauge. If the engine temp rise does not stop at 180F, you have a vapor lock. This is time when I have had some trouble. If the area above the thermostat is not filled the thermostat may not sense the actual water temperature and may not open. Vent the high point until water flows freely. Stopping the engine can make it easier since the engine temperature won't continue rising as you vent. Keep on filling as necessary until the system runs normally- temp stays steady at 180F.
It's really easier than it may sound.

The lower engine pulley rotates at engine speed.
