Our boat is new to us and the few times I have changed the oil I have used a vacuum pump to pull the oil out. It doesn't work very well so last week I went to undo the drain plug and the drain plug bolt hit a bolt on the transmission ( or flywheel maybe) and it will not come out. It looks like I have to take the bolt out of the tranny to remove the oil drain bolt. We have a westerbeke 40. Has anybody else had this problem? I hate creating problems.........
thanks

You need a better pump, I have tried several, nothing comes close to how well the Moeller Vacuum Fluid Extractor works. It may be a little pricey then some, but well worth it IMO.

Cheers

Bill,
I have a W-40 in mine, and I do not have any interference getting the drain plug bolt out at all, but then last time I had mine out was at least a decade ago! I installed a quick drain oil pump using that drain plug hole....well worth it! Once the engine warms up a little and the oil gets viscous, shut her down, unscrew the oil fill cap(makes pumping easier;it allows air into the system), throw a valve, push a button, pump oil into an old milk jug.....done. Takes under 20 minutes to warm up engine, pump out old oil, replace filter and add new oil.

Cheers,
Tom

What is a 'quick drain oil pump'?

After a search on the net, it looks like this system is no longer available. This was a complete package that included a pump, fittings, and high pressure hosing, low pressure hosing that allowed you to flip a valve, push a button and drain your oil. There's a conversation about it here that includes a picture:

There is a pump from Jabsco that looks like it would work very similarly:

But you would need to figure out the fitting for the oil drain as well as the associated hosing. In my opinion, the convenience is well worth the expenditure and headache of setting up the system.
