Has anyone attempted to change the rear oil seal on a perkins 50 with the engine still in the boat?

Sounds like you like to torture yourself!!! A few years ago I had the engine out and they put new seals in then, but the bugger still drips!! This is on a Westerbeke, but the block is the same.

I have the same problem on my W40, I found this spot on the Dashews site http://www.setsail.com/s_logs/dashew/dashew249.html
and they are pretty knowledgble people but I haven't got the guts to try this yet - any takers?

Richard

No thanks... I'd rather keep a quart handy and pump the sump every few months. We usually add one quart during the season and then change the oil at the end of the season. If it ain't broke...
Neat theory though.

My rear seal on my W-50 has leaked for the last 2000 hours--about a cup every30 hours--has not gotten worse over 15 years. Two mechanics suggested not replacing it. One said, "I won't guarantee it will not leak when I am done." It is British so I think it was probably made to leak.
