Wondering if Solare is the only T-37 with a Westerbeast 33? I find the 33 to be a great size with enough power to punch into the nasty stuff the bay throws at us plus giving us a great cruising range burning .5 gph @ 6-6.5 on flat waters.

I see allot about W-50's, W40's & Universals but haven't heard of any other W-33's.

What about the boats built after '85, what's your iron spinnaker?

I have replaced my W-50 with a Yanmar 39 hp, but always thought that the W-50 was a bit too much power for the T37 and kind of a waste even though I ran a large alternator off it. I think a W-33 would be just fine. There are conditions that are beyond an engine to do well in (heading into those square waves of 3-9 ft, for instance) and more horsepower or torque is not going to make much of a difference. If you have having some difficulty or question with thrust, I would look at the pitch of your prop. An enormous amount of the power of any engine is lost to inefficiency in the props. My original prop from the factory was grossly overpitched. David Gerr's book is really an excellent reference on this. If I recall correctly he talks about 2 hp per 1000 lbs.

Yours is not the only Tartan 37 with the Westerbeke 33. Mine is as well. I believe that the Tartans built around 1984 had them installed. It is a great little engine and has more than enough power to push the boat. One word of caution. There is an inherent problem with the pistons -- I know of two engines (including mine) that had cracked heads. Westerbeke paid for half of the cost of replacing them. I had mine replaced several years ago - three of the pistons had cracked heads. It has worked fine ever since.

Seems to have plenty of power but in going over notes that the PO left, he did have to replace the pistons and also had the injector pump rebuilt. Runs fine from the few hours I've put on it so far
