Has anyone replaced the rear seal? I am a pretty confident "do-it-yourselfer" around engines, and think I could handle it. The main question...is it possible to do the job without pulling the engine?

Local mechanic quoted $1300 to replace the seal witht the engine in the boat so I guess it could be done. I threw my Westerbeke away so I guess I'll never know for sure.

I had a quote to fix mine and it was $800 and the mechanic said that he would not guarantee that it would not leak again. I ran my Westerbeast for about 3000 hours more with a leak (about a cup of oil every 12 hours of running time) and it really was not a problem other than having to clean up the diapers.

Look on the cruisers forum. This was discussed in pretty good detail. They talked about deflating a basketball, placing it beneath the engine, then inflating it to hold up the rear of the engine so you can remove the bellhousing. The rest was pretty straightforward.

Check back abut six posts, I did this on my boat. It was not all that difficult but I do still have a small leak nothing like it was before.
