I just bought a 1977 37'. It has the original engine, with 6000 hours, rebuilt 1500 hours ago. It still seems to run great! My question is should I use a different oil than the recommended 30 weight oil on an engine this old?

I have switched to 40 weight here in Mexico as it is so warm.

Just my two cents, but good quality oil and a filter every time are cheap insurance. I was changing the oil every 100 hrs, but I have a friend who is a Caterpillar mechanic who says that every 250 is good. I rarely make 200 before I chicken out!

I changed the oil today and adjusted the valve clearances and the rocker cover was super clean which I took as a good sign.
