Has anyone had any trouble or heard odd noises while in neutral comming from the the Hurth sailing gear?

Define the noise. The Hurth gear is not silent when it is turning or in neutral with the shaft turning. These are very robust units and it is very hard to kill them. I assume you have done all the normal things, like checking the fluid level.

Do you put the gear in reverse while sailing with a non feathering prop?

I always do (assuming that I remember) on the assumption that it offers less drag and will not unnecessarily wear the gbox output bearing/seal.

Any other opinions welcomed.

If, my memory serves me right, the manual states the transmission should be put into reverse when sailing and the motor is off.

I always put mine in reverse. I have a folding prop and having it in reverse collapses the blades and thus reduces drag, plus keeps the shaft from rotating.
