There are several other ways to lose cooling.
Impellor pieces can stick in the elbow coming from the pump. No amount of flushing will remove these. Disassembly is the only way.
Some engines had a Tartan made injection elbow made of iron pipe. These will corrode shut in salt water. Replace it with a Westerbeke elbow.
Zincs need to be replaced at every oil change. If not, they can crumble into pieces like small gravel. These pieces will clog a heat exchanger very well. If you have the exchanger with the rubber cap, remove it and then you can back flush the pieces out of the heat exhanger.
I even found an accumulation of salt inside the hose leading from the oil cooler. Don't know why. I replaced the hose and crossed my fingers.
I have experienced all of these.
