Beta Kubota 38 question?
I purchased a used beta38 for install.
My tartan 37 previously had a westerbeke 33
Beta 38 appears to long for engine bed area.
Any suggestions from other who installed same beta 38? Did you have to cut your shafts shorter or modify engine bed to fit beta 38?
Thank you I appreciate any shared advice.

I installed a Yanmar in my T37, so I am not familiar with your Beta 38, but the W50 had a very odd mating to the Hurth transmission that required the bed to be about 1.5" too high from most marine diesel/tranmission arrangements. Most marine diesel/transmission drive trains put the output shaft at the level of the bed--unlike the W50. So my guess is that "yes" you will need to cut down the bed to fit. I understand that Beta has custom fabricated special mounts for their engines to accomodate the T 37's odd bed, but, frankly, it is not that big of a deal if you have fiberglassing skills (see my pictures on the technical pages of this site) and there have been reported problems with fit of the Beta fabricated mounts by some on this list who have installed them. Remember when you cut it down to go far enough--you can always shim up, but you cannot shim down. FWIW. Yanmar has a good generic book on engine installation that is worth looking at. No matter what engine you install, you need to be able to get it perfectly in line with the shaft without being at the top or bottom of the engine mount adjustments. I see new production boats that screw this up at the factory and just was working on a friend's boat where the boatyard installed a new engine and it is not able to be aligned with the adjustment space available. Very depressing to spend $20K and have to take everything out to stop destructive vibration. We are losing the old guys who knew how to plan an installation. Planning is everything, I strongly suggest you use the string method to check your bed work to make sure you get the bed right. I made a cardboard mock up of the engine to assure that it would be in the position and glad I did.

We bought our boat with a Beta 38 already installed. Judging by the receipts and notes, it looks like it involved cutting down part of the engine pan and getting custom feet from Beta. I'm away from the boat until July 9. Can send some pictures then if it will help.

I am sure you can make it fit. The W33 and W50 were a bit shorter than Betas and Yanmars, but I am confident you can make it fit. You might need a new shaft and that might be a good idea anyway while you are doing this.

Thank you for your post
Photos would be a great help
After speaking with beta it appears no other tartan 37s that repowered with betas had a westerbeke 33, so we are on own no footprints of engine beds were offered.

Similar to Velera, when I installed a Yanmar in my last boat, I made a wood model (and various metal parts) of all the critical dimensions of the new engine, set it on the bed with engine mounts attached and measured how the bed had to be modified. It took a lot of time, but it worked the first time and I used the boat another 20 years. A buddy used the same model to add a 2GM20 to his boat.

That said however, you might want to check with Beta to see if they will sell the custom mounts alone. If they will and you can make the required measurements accurately, it will save lots of time. They have a measurement sheet with the required dimensions (best to record in mm not inches). I went this route and everything worked fine. I did end up putting shims under the mounts so the adjustments could be lowered more.

Good luck

Thank you for your post and advice

Here's a bunch of photos of our Beta 38 installation.

Yes, our stuffing box needs some attention. I'm moderately concerned that the stuffing box is really close to the shaft coupling and there won't be much room to work in there.

PS. Found the answer to "Which Westerbeke did this Beta 38 replace?" here on the forum:

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1006

It was a W-40.
