Hi again. I have had lots of trouble replacing my impellor.

I have replaced the machanical fuel pump so the plate of the back of the Jabsco pump is now easier to access. I can remove the cover plate, but then can't get the impellor out without removing the pump entirely. I am getting tired of doing this.

The impellor pullers that I have found only fit larger sizes.

Does anyone have a solution or other ideas?

It's been a couple years but I don't recall having much of a problem. Nothing a couple offset screwdrivers couldn't solve. (cushion the housing edge before you pry) But I don't know our pump by name... I'm just assuming it's the same.

I just use channel locks. I set the channel lock openning to match the impeller width at the hub, grab the impeller snugly (not too tight to prevent damaging the rubber), wiggle it back and forth and pull. After a while and alot of wiggling it does pull out. .

I was down on the boat today and I thought I might have made a mistake with the placement of the battery box (beneath the pilot berth). I was concerned about the water pump and maintenance of the impeller. As it turns out, the battery box is not the problem. It is the fuel lift pump.

Do folks with a W50 need to remove the pump to swap out the impeller? I seem to remember the W40s I saw had the impeller plate facing forward. My W50 faces aft. Are there any trick? Also can anyone recommend a replacement?

Thanks,
Craig

There may be trick, but I haven't found it. I always take the entire pump out. By doing that, I can also inspect the entire pump, and replace all suspect parts. It's not the easiest maintenance task, but after doing it about 6 times, it is getting a little easier.

I replaced my old mechanical fuel pump with an electric pump. I added a switch to run the pump with the engine off for bleeding. Eliminating the fuel lines gave me access to the back of the raw water pump at the same time.

If you want more info on the fuel pump I can supply a write up.

I think I have finally learned something about removing the impellor.

When the pump rotates, the small bump on the inside of the impellor bore is jammed against the shoulder of the flat on the pump shaft. This is what makes it hard to remove. If you grip the impellor and twist it in the SAME direction as the pump rotates, it will free the bump from being wedged against the shoulder of the flat. Then it should be easy to pull off. I experimented with a spare pump one day until I learned how to do this. Now maybe I won't have to remove the pump everytime. Afterall, this is why I replaced the old mechanical lift pump.

I also lubricate ALL surfaces of the impellor with a waterproof grease before installation.
