I am going to change the transmission fluid on my W50. I believe it has the Hurth transmission. Do you use a drain plug at the bottom or suck it out of the dipstick hole like with the engine oil?

Personally, I would suck it out of the dipstick. Less mess. As near as I can figure out from the 40 year old manual, you should be looking at about a quart of fluid.

Most of it will come out. Warming up the engine and trans helps too. The ticket is do it often.

I always just suck it out, does well. I think it uses .60 of a qt. The manual is incorrect at .35 qt. Be sure the check level and don't use synthetic fluid, just the oil school stuff.

If you put a quart of fluid in a Hurth transmission you will most likely blow the gaskets. If I recall correctly, the Hbw150 on the W50 takes 500ml. Half that. Don't ask how I learned this.

Now I'm wondering if the position of the tranny on hard would affect the dipstick and whether it's supposed to be 0.35 or 0.6.

Most boats are blocked close to level, some we a little bow up. Our engines are close to the max angle, for the tyranny. I think the angle changes the level and capacity.

OOOOkayyyy. So what's the correct volume? Velera? 0.35? 0.6? You would think the manual would be near to correct.

I do not recall for sure, but it would have to be closer to .6 lt. what you might be seeing is a range? Sounds like .5 would be in the center of those two numbers. I have drained it and sucked it out. I think I agree with sucking if you have drained it in the past. It does not have the option of getting a lot of crud in it and I think you get just as much out sucking as you do with the drain because of the angle.

BTW. I recall the HBW150 manual is on line, I think. Try it.
