Considering purchase of a T37 that has been repowered with a 30hp Yanmar. Seems too small for a T37. Thoughts?

I don't think it is too small. My boat has the W50 with the wildly over pitched 2 blade prop. We run 6 knots at about 1700 RPM which means we are only putting about 25HP to the shaft. So a 30HP motor with a properly pitched prop should do you nicely. But I'm not an expert and I didn't sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night. Snicker

I put a 3YM30 in my Bristol 35 several years ago. The boat was 12,500#, somewhat lighter than the Tartan 37, but it was more than enough engine for the boat. Should be fine in a Tartan 37, since the next engine up is 4 cylinder. I put a 2YM20 in my Pearson 10M (33') with a folding prop, and that worked fine, although I'd want more if I were motoring in a heavy headsea.

I always thought the W-50 really had more power than was required at 41 hp. I think that 30 will be fine actually. I have a Yanmar 39hp and it does fine. Make sure you have a properly pitched propeller—you should be able to reach hull speed at wide open throttle and cruise at 80%—WOT on most of these would e just over 7kt and your 80% would be somewhere around 6.2 Kt—though these speeds will vary with load and condition of your bottom. Flat calm water.

You'll be fine with a 30hp. Many T-37s were delivered with Universal W40s, with just a couple more hp. The Westerbeke W50 was an overkill at 41hp. Fun when you needed a kick to make a bridge or get off a sandbar.
