Mine looks pretty old and ragged, and the board that it sits on has had water damage in the past. Anyone had major problems with it or had to replace? What to watch for?

It is the water lift muffler. There is most likely nothing wrong with it unless someone ran the engine for an extended time with no water flowing through the cooling system. The one you have is the best quality one availabile on the market. As someone suggested, do not judge it by its outward appearance. You will need a bigger one if you repower and want to keep your warranty. The old Westerbekes had ones that had small hoses going in and out. Newer diesels require easier breathing in exhaust so larger hoses. But if you have an old Westerbeke it is probably OK.

Thanks all. I'll keep it and just monitor it. The mounting board is soft in a couple of the corners where the screws are, but I don't guess it's going anywhere. If I get really caught up on the to do list, guess I could replace the board.

Zach,

You will probably need to replace the board under the muffler way before you need to replace the muffler.

Next time you run the engine, you should get near it and check for exhaust gas leaks. Failure points is usually the top around the inlet line and outlet lines. The inlet is susceptible to overheating and vibration. The outlet mostly cracks due to vibration of the exhaust line going overboard with slugs of water. But they are well built devices. If mine fails, I am replacing it with another one just like it.

Thanks for that info. I'm changing the oil this weekend. So, while I'm down there, I'll check it out.

If the exhaust leaks you'll have seawater mixed with the exhaust. It can be a big failure, keep an eye on it. I just replaced mine during the motor replacement, it looked fine.
