Bleeding a W50 is a pain in the ass. You should be seeing a bunch of fuel the the injector top nuts. It's best to open all nuts at the same time helps to push the air out. Opening them one at a time didn't work for me. I think you may have a air leak. The bypass fuel does return to the tank. The VERY last ditch effort is to use Starting Fluid spray like CRC Jump Start. Use it super sparingly and slowing increase the shot. It will start and run the air out. Be careful I blew a head gasket using it years ago. I worked on a tugboat the only way it would start was with a shot of starting spray.

I had trouble bleeding my engine once. Got a mechanic to help me out. He used WD-40 for a starter spray. Said diesels get addicted to starter fluid and won't run without it.

But if you're swapping engines anyway, let the next owner worry about an addicted diesel. Rolling Eyes

Got it started! Found a busted/loose hose clamp on the return fuel line. I also wasn't cranking long enough on bleeding the injectors. Finally got fuel there, and she fired right up! Heading to the yard to get new engine install started tomorrow. Anyone want an old W50? Not sure how we'd get it to you if you aren't here in St Maarten, but we could give it a go. About to post it on a few Facebook groups:
$1000.00 or best offer
Westerbeke W50
Built 1980, pulled and rebuilt 2003
40 hp
Hurth HWB 10 transmission
Unknown engine hours. 1350 hours since we have owned (2013).
Oil and filter change every 50 hours
New starting motor 2015
Coolant drain and acid flush fresh water system 2017
New raw water pump 2017
Barnacle buster treatment raw water system 2018
New alternator (55amp) 2018
New fresh water pump 2019
Transmission pulled and rebuilt 2019
New damper plate 2019
Rear seal gasket replaced 2019
Injectors removed and chemical cleaned 2019
Valve inspection and adjustment 2019
Rocker Cover gasket replaced 2019

Spares:
Raw water pump (used)
High pressure injector pump (used)
Starting motor (used)
Multiple oil filters
Multiple raw water impellers
Multiple pencil zinc's
Large box of other various spares

Starts without hesitation. Very little smoke. Oil pan gasket needs changed (easy to do once engine pulled). Some trouble shifting to reverse (easy to troubleshoot/rebuild transmission once engine pulled). Oil leaks are minimal and would mostly be fixed with new oil pan gasket. No overheating to high 2600+ rpms (we run at 2000-2300 normally with temp at constant 180). Oil pressure always normal at 50-60 psi.

No doubt. But if someone wanted it, I think we could figure it out. Cargo is still on the move in the Caribbean even though people aren't.

Your best bet to sell is finding a boat down in the islands on a budget. Blows their motor and needs a replacement. I sold my running W50 a few years ago, in Norfolk. A guy was delivering his new to him Tartan 40 and overfilled the oil. He pulled into town and bought the motor a few days before we headed south. I just lost confidence in the beast, if just sailing locally would of kept it and carry TowBoatUS.

What are you installing?

Yanmar 3jh40. Yanmar here in St Maarten is pulling the old one and installing the new one including the engine bed modifications.
