I am in the market to become a Tartan owner. I have looked at the posts on yachtworld and there are some nice boats there, however, I don't see the mix of price and condition I am looking for. I thought I might post and find a Tartan owner looking to sell , who for one reason or another didn't want the hassle a public listing brings. Or maybe someone with a listing has more wiggle room on price and can contact me without letting the world know. Hey worth a shot right?

Never hurts to ask! We had someone selling last year and it was a major bargain.

Looks to me that someone got a real bargain on Yacht World 1977 Tartan 37 at $29,900 (asking). Generally Tartan 37's seem to be around the $65-75,000 range.

They are just a great boat and worth every penny. Mmm Beer

Hanktoo,
Where are you located? Sometimes location affects the asking price, New England and Chesapeake boats tend to be higher than Florida boats and you're right, if you can avoid the price hike of a broker all the better. Of course, a broker can bargain down on your behalf and make sure the transaction goes smoothly. Just make sure you get a good surveyor to go over the boat.

Looks like YachtWorld has 15 of these listed ranging from 35k to 75k. The low priced models usually need a cash/labor infusion for upgrades/maintenance while the high end can be in sail away condition with some goodies. I did not see any in Soundings and the Chesapeake Bay Tartan Sailing Association does not have any listed nor does TONE (Tartan Owners of New England).

We bought our lady for 35K and immediately put 15K into upgrades and repairs. But she had been neglected for a few years as the previous owner was across the state at the time.

Seems to me some of the Tartans listed on Yacht World appear to be very good values, even in this depressed buyers' market. My experience is that the best deals are often among the most expensive examples. If you have to replace an engine, sails, a bunch of new through hull fittings, or do a significant bottom work to make it safe, you will discover that a bargain, isn't. Don't ask me how I know this.
